But what began as a mountaineering expedition in the remote Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan, quickly transformed into something far greater—something eternal.

Bhutan, known for its philosophy of Gross National Happiness, simplicity, and spiritual depth, made a profound impact on Johnny. But it was the children—curious, eager, and bright-eyed—who stole his heart. Among the temples and towering peaks, Johnny discovered a deeper calling: to inspire the next generation to live boldly, fearlessly, and with compassion.

Johnny didn’t just want to climb. He wanted to give. So he introduced Bhutanese youth to something entirely new: skateboarding. He brought boards, pads, and gear—sharing his passion with kids who had never seen a skateboard before. It wasn’t long before the energy caught on. The streets of Thimphu echoed with laughter, the scrape of wheels, and the sound of something being born—possibility.

In his own words, Johnny said, “We all have the power to do something extraordinary. You don’t have to be older, richer, or more important. You just have to start.” His time in Bhutan was short, but his presence was immense.

In October 2015, just four years after his visit to Bhutan, Johnny passed away tragically at the age of 23. The world lost a bold soul, a fearless adventurer, and a deeply kind human being. But what he left behind has only grown stronger.

Johnny’s father, Brian Strange, made it his mission to honor his son’s spirit—not just in memory, but in action. Partnering with Bhutanese officials and the wonderful team at Skate Bhutan, Brian helped bring Johnny’s dream full circle: a full-fledged skatepark in Bhutan’s capital city.

The Johnny Strange Skatepark opened in Thimphu in 2017. Today, it stands not only as a place to ride—but as a symbol of courage, creativity, and connection. Every grind, every trick, every push forward carries Johnny’s essence: Live big. Give bigger. Never stop exploring.

Brian’s quiet but tireless dedication is a testament to the love between a father and a son. “Johnny and I climbed all over the world together,” Brian shared. “But it’s his integrity and desire to help others that I remember today.” Through his efforts, thousands of children now have a safe space to express themselves, build confidence, and feel free.
